Why is it so delicious?

My wife had served us a delicious meal and my thoughts flashed back to my mother.

I had gone to meet my mother as I often did. As always with folded hands, I bowed to mother and touched her feet. Gripping me by the shoulders she picked me up and  embraced me. The glowing delight on her face was all encompassing.

After a brief update, she stood up and said, "You must be hungry? Let me get you some lunch. It's hot out there, you must be thirsty, what would you like to drink?"

Mothers are always happy to see their children. After they see them, all they think of is feeding their offspring. They see their child, and instantly they want to stuff food into their child's mouth.

Love and food. Two of human beings very important nutrients. Delicious served unconditionally with a smile and for free. All they want is our time and attention.

Mother darted into the kitchen asked her maid to help her and shooed me out of the kitchen. In a little while, the aroma of the cooking tickled my nose and palette.  Presto! there was some irresistible and delicious food for me to eat. I simply wolfed it down and then some more.

Whatever mother cooked, it was so tasty, even the most common of dishes were transformed into something delicious. My wife Mohini too is a fantastic cook, particularly when she is cooking for her sons.

I couldn't but help think, 'Wow! Mother's are so special. They love and respect us even when our behaviour makes us unworthy of their devotion'.

I recalled one evening, when I was a young man, our mother had served our father and all of us a tasty meal. After dinner my father asked us," Did you ever think about,  why your mother's cooking is so delicious?"

The questioned gnawed at me. So whenever I ate my mother's cooking, I thought about it. I nagged mother to tell me, but she just laughed it off. I tried to study what it was that she was doing, and try to understand the secret. After a year I gave up and asked Dad.

His explanation was life changing. "Your mother adds a secret ingredient, and its called love. Whenever someone prepares food with love which inevitably a mother, and often a lover, wife, daughter, sister, granny or aunt do, the food is always delicious".

To the modern mind preoccupied with materialism, and the compulsive need to count and measure everything, the concept of love and friendship appears rather naive and old fashioned.

Love and friendship are anything but matters of fashion, they were, they are and they will remain the essence of a meaningful life.

I have learnt through these experiences that,
Anything done with love, passion and commitment is bound to be extraordinarily and rich.

To remain happy in marriage

In courtship we take great effort to please the partner. Each partner to win over the  affection and respect of the other, makes an effort to be interesting, thoughtful, and usually on his or her best  behaviour. Most often we put on an act suppressing our natural impulses.

We try very hard to live the unrealistic romantic dream, as depicted in romantic television serials, movies, novels, songs, poems, etc.. When we take our marriage vows, we expect that life would be a dreamy fairy tale.
Most discover that love may be blind but marriage is an eye opener.

Marriage jolts people because we believe that once we have acquired the partner, we can stop pretending. The reality may still be beautiful but we become unhappy because we think the partner has changed, whereas the partner has just reverted to being his or her normal self.

Is the reality bad or are the expectations unrealistic?
Each individual is a unique and strange creature, who the other partner wishes to mould as per their expectations. Nothing disappoints us more than unfulfilled expectations.

It is the nature of the human being to, favour what we do not have over what we already possess. That is why we remain in awe of people we cannot possess.
Anyone who is worth possessing simply cannot be possessed. We can choose to accept others as they are or be unhappy.

Each one of us is a unique and strange creature but that itself is our beauty. To accept that strangeness rather than trying to reform people to conform to our expectations is a key to happiness.

Typically men marry, thinking women will never change, but they do. Women believe the man will change, but men never change.

To remain happy, see goodness and beauty in the other, while understanding the flaws in one self. Give more than we demand just as we did during courtship and we have a very good chance of being happy as individuals  and as couples.

Marital Rape and Robbery.

The Delhi High Court, is currently hearing pleas seeking to make marital rape an offence. The honourable judges say that ".........The man will have to prove that she was a consenting party,”

Here the accused will have to prove his innocence. This is against all principles of natural justice.

While on this topic a reader once posed a question.

'If the man can be accused of rape for supposedly having sex without his wife's consent. Can the man charge his wife with robbery, if she supposedly spends his hard earned money without his consent?'

A husband and wife are almost always capable of resolving their own issues or come to an understanding provided there is little or no interference by the State. Once the government and judiciary gets involved into the personal and intimate lives of people, it always causes great harm to liberty. It also promotes abuse and exploitation by the state which fuels corruption.

A draconian law is necessary when it has impact on the vast majority and not the freak cases. History has always shown that greater the number of laws more corrupt the society.

Critics say that misplaced notions of Western feminism driven by their Marxist ideologies is driving these pleas and demands for legislation.
Their stated goal is to destroy society as it exists. A key target for destruction is the family institution, for it is the most fundamental unit of society.

No judiciary or government can ever replace the role and responsibilities of man and woman in a marriage.

In USA where such legislation has been passed. The number of people getting married has dropped by over 60% since then.
Worse 50% of children now come home to a no parent or single parent home when they return from school.

Homes broken by excessive government and judicial intervention can only lead to a broken society.
How can that be a good thing?

Unless their objective is to destroy the institution of marriage. They must allow long established and successful social and community institutions to function and help counsel the couples.

Why its April Fool's Day?

Six million Britons went to bed on September 2, 1752, and woke up on September 14. The reason? The Calendar (New Style) Act of 1750.

The mystery begins in 1582 when  Pope Gregory XIII was reigning as leader of the Roman Catholic church. He discovered that the Julian calendar that the church used at the time measured a year as 365 days and 6 hours long.

Actually the average length of a year is 365 days, 5 hours and 49 minutes.

Over 1300 years the error became very significant. So he released a Papal bull (a declaration from the leader of the Catholic Church) —decreeing that every country would have to shift to a new calendar and skip some days.

Britain being mainly a Protestant nation cared little for the Pope's wishes. Soon many Europeans and many parts of the world changed from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. Eventually 168 years later Britain too decided to shift.

So the King ordered that 11 days be wiped off the calendar in Sept 1752. The workers worked for only 19 days but were paid for 30 days. Some historians claim that is how the concept of 'paid leave' was born.

In the Roman Julian calendar the year began on 01 April, whereas the Gregorian calendar began on 01 January. Many Britons refused to change tradition and continued to celebrate 01 April as New year's day.

When royal orders failed to stop the celebrations on 01 April, the King decreed that all those who celebrate New Year's day on 01 April wold be called 'fools'.
